Is Atlanta "Home" To You?

I moved to Atlanta in 1995. September will be 14 years for me. During this time I can say with certainty that I’ve never felt at home in Atlanta. For me Atlanta is a place I live, not home. I’ve wanted to move but situations have kept me here. I’m not complaining in the slightest. I have a great life here, great relationships and opportunities. I’m not in a hurry to get somewhere else, although my house is for sale. I won’t get into all the reasons I want to leave, most are out of my control.

What I want to know is does Atlanta feel like home to you? If so, why? What do you like about it? Why do you choose to stay?

I can sympathize with your feelings. I moved down to Decatur back in 1992 with the intention to stay through the Olympics and then move back to Virginia. Family inertia (three kids will do that) has kept us in Decatur ever since. Like you, I have made good friends and generally like the area and cost of living but I feel my roots are shallow. Perhaps because most of my family and older friends are still up north and miss the familiarity of the places and rhythms of the tidewater and mid-atlantic region. Also, Atlanta is too far away from the ocean.

I guess as a native, I don’t have much choice but to feel like Atlanta is my home. I will say that I felt very different about Atlanta when I moved back after college. Before going up north, I couldn’t wait to get out of Atlanta. When I got back, I really appreciated everything on a different level.

I especially appreciated the people here – they really are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people around. I think it is easy to take the people for granted, since there is this feeling that we can find a great community anywhere. I’m not so sure. I know other folks who have moved back after realizing that the people and the communities here are special.

I’m of course rather biased…. I’m practically a card-carrying member of the booster club.

Well, I’ve never lived any where else.

I answer the "where’s home?" question with, "Well, I’ve lived in Atlanta for 12 years, but I grew up in Nashville." So, I’m gradually moving to calling Atlanta "home," but it’s taking me a while. We don’t plan to leave any time soon, since the Mrs and I are both self-employed with several clients here.
