Stickers, vanity plates & flags
Last week my wife and I had a discussion about the nigh-ubiquitous South Carolina flag/sticker that we see everywhere during our commute (Smyrna to Midtown). We see about a million variations of the crescent moon and palmetto tree on everything from bumper stickers to license plates to magnets attached to cars.
Here’s a visual for the uninitiated:
Which got me thinking about the various stickers (mostly the ovoid EAV ones), license plates (mostly Va-Hi) and other stuff (some KWD ephemera) that I see in my travels around town and during my commute. I really love that intown neighborhood pride is so high.
While the SC example is my starting point, I’m more interested in what Atlanta-specific lovemarks you guys see, own or display. EAV and Va-Hi stick out in my mind, but I have friends in Kirkwood so the KWD stuff is also prevalent in my mind.
My ultra-local neighborhood, Smyrna (not Vinings) sells “Townie” stickers in the EAV mold. I always think of scruffy, unshaven kids reading the Flagpole in Athens when I hear “Townie” but maybe that’s just me.
What do you see? What do you own?
Leave a comment or a link to a picture or two.
I’ve got a couple cabbagetown sticks and a nice ITP oval like the EAV one…just been too lazy to apply to the vehicle so far.
That’s funny you bring that up — a few weeks ago I saw a sweet lil suburban mom in a big ole SUV from Cobb County with an oval "T.I." sticker next to her magnetic soccer ball. Of course, the first thing I thought of was the house-arrested, self-proclaimed "King of the South," ATL and American Gangster star/ and local rap legend, and thought it was hilarious.
What would we do without google? Turns out it’s Thousand Islands. Not nearly as fun.
The sticker says my zip code isn’t just a postal code, it’s a way of life. But you don’t see a bunch of those stickers, since we’re largely above the sort of mindlessly clannish trash talk that is characteristic of those with no real confidence in their own worth.
Also, my neighborhood played chess with your neighborhood, and your neighborhood lost. Bad.
I saw/thought of another one on the drive home: L5P
Just saw one on a state senator’s car that said "P.I." any ideas?
I didn’t go to either school, but this (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2008/02/07/chomp_0207.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab) is ridiculous! The state of Georgia issuing University of Florida license plates! Our lawmakers ARE that corrupt and will succomb to any pressure what so ever.
I really like our Lake Claire banner, which is a humorous take on the "Ski Lake Claire" theme.

However, it serves mostly as an inside joke for residents as the majority of other Atlantans are oblivious to either a) Lake Claire’s existence as a neighborhood, or b) the fact that there is no actual lake on which to ski. (Lake Claire is named for the intersection of Lakeshore and Claire streets.)
Very cool, Patrick. Count me as previously oblivious.
I always thought the South Carolina flag looked awesome.
This reminds me of a flag I use to see, but I think the company no longer does business. Not sure, but these guys were also out of South Carolina.

I don’t know which is more obnoxious the SC flag (which comes in every color of the rainbow) or the TX flag. And for that matter, I don’t know who is more annoying, S. Carolinians or Texans.
I don’t care if you have a second home in OBX or HHlighthouse . I don’t care if you’re originally from SSI or vacation in JH. Get you stupid ass off the phone lady and learn how to drive your gi-normous SUV!
Glad to know I’m not the only one who thinks Athens when I hear the word "townie" but I always picture them reading The Flagpole at the Grit. Okay, now I want a swissburger from The Grill.

What are you talking about Lumberjack? How does the UF alumni organization in Georgia taking advantage of the law that allows ANY organization to create a special license plate indicate Georgia lawmakers are corrupt? As a matter of fact, Auburn alumni did the same two years ago and since the AU tag is now second only behind the UGA tag in university vanity tags in the state (ahead of Tech, both GSUs, and all the rest) you must have been living under a rock, as well as being uninformed, to make such a ridiculous comment.
I have one of these:

How am I uninformed? Pretty well informed to be talking about a subject that has just recently been published. As for Auburn’a license plates, I think that is sick too. Which mascot did they use on their plates, tiger, war eagle, ugly redneck co-ed?
i think ‘confused’ wins the award for funniest, snarky comment.
speaking of snarky, wth is d.ortiz? did he just up and vanish?
I just affixed my UF tag this morning.
Uninformed because you clearly know nothing about the subject you brought up. Immature and childish for your silly attempt at a joke.
