The A-Train Trip Planner

Citizens For Progressive Transit have put together a way cool online trip planner. It enables you to plan trips in the Atlanta area using public transportation, your bicycle, and even your own two feet. You choose your trip type (walking, biking, bike to transit, etc.), the time of day, and even your walking or biking speed, and a starting and ending location, then click a button, and it spits out a travel plan for you.

I haven’t used it yet, but would love for public transit folks to give a review. Like, maybe, our very own James, who is conducting his very own experiment with Atlanta’s public transit.

I haven’t used the planner much, since I know how to get most places I go to, but this tool is actually pretty nifty. They’ve added a number of features from when it was 1st offered, and it does a decent job.

I bike a lot, and not only does the bike feature tell you what kind of street you’ll be on (LOCAL STREET, MAJOR THOROUGHFARE, etc.), it tries to keep you on more bike friendly streets. It also gives an elevation profile and lets you weigh the hills vs. the traffic. For example, getting from midtown to L5P defaults to using North Ave (less traffic), but if you give a bit anti-hill factor, it puts you on Ponce. Cool.

If only they could add a feature to account for potholes and asshole drivers…

THIS IS HUGE FOR ATLANTA! It wouldn’t be where it is today without countless volunteer hours on the part of one of my favorite Flexcar members, David Emory! Kudos to David!
