I survived the CNN Center shooting

Timely, sensationalist headline? Check.

Ok, so I was actually in the basement-level athletic club at the time (1:30) of the shooting but I can tell you this much: despite the fact that I was involved in a very spirited game of 4-on-4 basketball, it sounded like a herd of elephants stampeding above us in the atrium.

About 2 dozen athletic club members filtered down into the club talking about a shooting, so we stopped playing for about 10 minutes. We were informed 3 times over the internal loudspeakers that the situation was in-hand an that those who were injured had been taken to area hospitals.

If you want to know more, keep on eye on CNN.

I was in the Moni lobby at the time, using their free WiFi, so I was about 25-30 feet from this when it happened. It was chaos.

My wife was teaching a class at CNN on a top-level floor with a window looking over the atrium. Says that the REAL noise was people running and knocking over tables and chairs to get out of the way. Blind panic.

If concealed-weapon carry were more popular, a dozen people in the atrium would have had guns, a majority of the bystanders would know not to panic around guns, the perpetrator would have died on the scene, and there would have been no story. Sigh.

I think the chain of events would be more like this:
    1) People with concealed weapons would take them out in face of a possible threat.
    2) Other people would see the guns, and think one of these people had actually fired the shots.
    3) Complete chaos would ensue, and several innocent people would end up dead.

You overestimate the intelligence of a crowd.
