Jake’s is back!
I’m sure I’m not the only one who was on the verge of tears when Jake’s closed its doors on Highland Ave. to make room for Johnny’s to move in, but I have great news – they’re back!
Only two blocks away from the original location at the other end of Sampson Street at the corner of Lake, Jake’s recently reopened it’s doors in the hood. I’ve also been told that the business next to them is a “Picnic To Go” shop, which is a brilliant concept (and I hope they succeed). Granted, it might not be ice cream weather, but you should stop in anyway…they never disappoint and the names of their concoctions are always good for a giggle.
Does anyone have the scoop (get it?) about what happened with Jake’s franchises? In 2004 and 2005 Jake’s were popping up all over (Peachtree Hills, Woodruff Park, Howell Mill (now West Egg)) and then they all closed. Did something happen to Jake’s (the parent)?
From what I heard, he got nailed for tax evasion or something similar and ended up closing all of the stores except for the original. The people that took over the Jake’s at piedmont & 10th seem to be just as it was before – lots of fun flavors, and the place still has a pretty cool atmosphere.
Folks that run West Egg are the same people that ran the Jake’s there before. Jake’s is apparently a franchise but at least according to the folks at West Egg, was to pricey and they wanted to branch out off the Jake’s formula or something. Wish they had kept the franchise though — I miss their ice cream and getting dinner there.
