4th of july is the new labor day?

yes, folks, its is now officially ‘hip’ to celebrate the 4th (okay, let the elitism comments come, i know they will, but c’mon, you know what I mean.)

so if you are still looking for something to do this fourth of july i have two suggestions to offer. first for those of you who are into the ‘hip’, seen-and-be-scene kind of thing, or are looking to impress that person in the office you have had you eye on, let me suggest the 4th of july bbq at TWO urban licks. according to the email they sent me, the bbq promises to be quite an experience –

Listen to the live band while taking in TWO’s view of the city skyline
or play bocce ball with your pals.
Chef Scott Serpas will be grilling up some 4th of July favorites
like TWO’s famous “Big Ass Burger” and homemade andouille sausage.
Call to make a reservation.

for those of you who have ever had scott serpas’s lamb lollipops, you will know that when the man puts meat on a grill amazing things will happen.

and imagine how chic you will sound in the cube farm when you casually drop the line about hanging out amongst the hip of the hip.

more of an indie kid? looking for something to establish your cred of eschewing everything mainstream or midtown-y?

have no fear there is something for you to. i got an email from criminal records today which said

Now for a little advance notice. As you may well know, next Tuesday is July 4th. It’s holiday for most, but Criminal Records will be open from 10AM to 6PM, partly because we’re gluttons for punishment and partly because we’re having a PARTY!!! Our friend, Ria, of the famously delicious Bluebird Cafe, is providing us with the BBQ (vegetarian riblets with potato salad and coleslaw, deeeelish!). I’ll be getting the Texas toast and ice cream sandwiches and…um, what else do people eat on Independence Day? E-mail your suggestions to BBQ@criminal.com, and I’ll see what I can get. There’ll be beer, of course. You don’t have to e-mail me about that.

i have no doubt that the food, tunes and of course, people-watching will be quite something over at criminal. and i assure you everyone there will have heard of the shins.

i’d probably make a reservation for TWO. for criminal records, not so much.

and what will i be doing, you ask?

neither, i’m still in dc with my family trying to survive bangladesh-style flooding.

Actually, I don’t know what you mean.

Is the 4th ‘hipper’ than in previous years? Do you mean that there are more ‘hip’ events on the 4th this year?
