Do the Percolator
Atlanta suffers with an overabundance of chain coffee shops, hence Starbucks galore. Yet a few privately owned java stores have opened with success in our city, getting raves from metro-dwellers who prefer to deviate from the norm. Iíve got the scoop on the newest one percolating soon near you.
Inman Perk Coffee has opened one location in Flowery Branch, and is opening another store in Inman Park. The Inman Park store will open on Elizabeth Street; both coffee shops are family owned. I had a chance to speak with manager Guy Ettinger, and he explained the Inman Park location would have slightly different hours and even more enticing coffee drinks for us city folks.
Inman Perk coffee concoctions come in simple small, medium, and large sizes. Donít worry about getting the lingo down for your double-venti-choco-latte-dry-soy-blah blah at Inman Perk. Options include espresso, cappuccino, turtle mocha (yum), several iced drinks, and many other coffees for your pleasure. Sweet treats round out the menu with pastries and a specialty PB & J sandwich. I had a latte with a vanilla shot on my first visit to Inman Perk that was excellent.
The Flowery Branch location is coming up in blooms. Local Atlanta artist Sabrina Sextonís first public photography exhibit ëPetalsí features her delicate photographs of beautiful and exotic flowers. Proceeds from each sale benefit the National Prostate Coalition. Soon you can check out her work online @ www.sugar7.com
They do, also, have free wi-fi at the one in Flowery Branch. Hopefully the one in Inman Park will get it…
I wish them luck. My Coffee Love is already spoken for, as I am committed to my neighborhood shop Joe’s in East Atlanta. Joe’s provides the free WiFi as well. W00t!
I love to check out coffee shops, but don’t drink coffee. What I do like is a nice rich sweet hot chocolate… yummm!! Will have to check it out…
Inman Park is going to need ten new coffee shops to accomodate the four thousand new residents once all the condos on N. Highland come online.
Right around the corner on Edgewood a new tea shop opened off Wadell, if you want a break from coffee. They have lots of good loose teas.
“Inman Perk” coffee with a location in Flowery Branch? What’s that about? How does one decide when opening two locations that one will be in Inman Park and one in Flowery Branch? Maybe the owners have a lake house?
Anyway – a note about independent stores: While many of them have caught on to the fact that Starbucks is as much of an adult milkshake shop as a coffeehouse and now do those “blended” things, very few of them get the concept of iced coffee. Starbucks does it right – they brew double-strong coffee specifically as iced coffee. Most independent shops have horrible iced coffee, if they have it at all. I live three blocks from Joe’s and would much rather stop in there, but their iced coffee is so-so at best. Same with iced Chai (my wife’s drink). So when we’re out during the day looking for iced drinks, we seek out Starbucks. As much as I’d prefer to support my neighborhood coffeehouse or local shops in general, they just don’t do our drinks well.
So local places, if you read this, go to Starbucks and see what they’re selling (hell, they yell out every order; it’s pretty easy market research) and figure out how to make that well.
I’ve been to Joe’s many times..love it. If you read their menu, you’ll see the description of their house iced coffee (coffee, espresso, sugar in the raw and honey). They are nice folks. I’m sure if you ask for doubled brewed or an iced Americano, they’d give it to you. I’ve work in a few coffee shops and they all prepare their chai the same : syrup+milk+ice. If you really want to support the independents, take time to read their menus or tell them how you want your drink.
