Ben Jones says to avoid Dukes of Hazzard movie

Well, I could have told anyone to avoid it the moment they made Jessica Simpson Daisy. Once upon a time, Ben Jones was my congressman (he’s the first politician I remember meeting. It was at a neighborhood fundraiser and I’m pretty sure I asked him about the show a bunch of times… he was so cool…), so I’m particularly inclined to listen to his movie recommendations. His involvement in the original Dukes series just increases his credibility that much more (Ben Jones’ website wasn’t working at posting time).

Ben Jones, a former Georgia congressman who played the wisecracking mechanic on the popular series from 1979-85, said profanity and sexual content in the film make a mockery of the family friendly show.

“Basically, they trashed our show,” said Jones, who now lives in the mountains of Washington, Va. “It’s one thing to do whatever movie they want to do, but to take a classic family show and do that is like taking “I Love Lucy” and making her a crackhead or something.”

So, let me get this straight.

A show whose two heroes are jobless, retro-confedate cousins who drive around recklessly all day, evading police and shooting dynamite-tipped arrows, pausing usually only to stop at their favorite country bar, is “family-friendly.”

Those same people flirting, winking and saying ‘shit’ a few times is not.

So says a man who, for six years, played a character whose name is slang for female genitalia.

    Three cheers for family values!
