Hamdog and Luther Burger

Oakhurst Village locale Mulligan’s (630 E Lake Drive — my street!) is getting some serious nationwide attention these days. I will leave it to the reader to judge if the press is positive or not, but we all know the old saying about all press being good press.

Why all the fuss? Stories about revitalized urban neighborhoods? Scrappy business owner does good for the community? No, it seems that Mulligan’s has made its mark by serving two of the most unbelievably amazing-sounding, artery-blocking, digestion-destroying, Mount-Everest-scale menu items outside of Scotland.

In fact, the items are so legendary that they have made urban legend site Snopes as confirmation to the question of whether or not Luther Vandross invented a hamburger served between two glazed Krispy Kreme donuts. But more legendary locally is the Hamdog:

… a hot dog wrapped in a beef patty that’s deep fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions, and served on a hoagie bun topped with a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries. (As Nicholas Lang, a professor of surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, told an Associated Press reporter, “If you choke [a Hamdog] down, you might as well find a heart surgeon because you are going to need one.”)

You should probably read the whole writeup and see a picture of this beast.

It is not difficult to defend the dominance of Southern culture when one has such awesomeness as this for ammunition.

But seriously, this is getting some serious attention:

My brother visited a couple of weeks ago, and we went to Mulligans. He had the Hamdog; I, the Luther. We both left quite satisfied.

I had a hamdog in November, 2003. Thankfully I had 14 beers beforehand, otherwise it would have been gross.

The Hamdog is a great treat, but I personally like the Luther Burger better. They are both delicious with or without beer!
