required reading for winter sports

okay, with baseball season over (at least for braves fans, and even for cubs fans like me – apologies bti) i thought i might take the opportunity to remind you that we also happen to have a professional hockey and basketball team in this town.

some good reading for those of you interested in following more closely the hawks and the thrashers are these two blogs, both writen by amateur, local fans who cover both teams with a tremendous passion.

for the thrashers, check out do the thrashers have large talons. not only does the author have an amazing passion for thrashers hockey, he digs into the statistics of hockey with a mind that would make bill james proud.

and for the hawks, check out atlanta hawks blog. author matt is back after a summer hiatus and does a great job of covering the ups and downs of the team. and let’s be honest, there really aren’t that many blogs about the hawks.

don’t forget both seth and myself have pledged to get on the hawks bandwagon, so point your browser that way and join us….

Lamentation for the Braves

Andruw’s not staying, TBS cedes Braves coverage to Peachtree TV and I don’t feel so good myself.

:-(

At least the Mets aren’t in the playoffs.

quick question for you auburn fans.

seriously, there seem to be a bunch of you in the metro area, so here goes.

btw – before i ask this, keep in mind that i went to a division iii school, have no school spirit and care about college football as i do about a microsoft press release.

why is it that auburn fans festoon their cars with so much crap?

seriosuly, every other team’s fans seem to content themselves with one sticker, or maybe a license plate, or a livense plate holder.

not auburn fans.

they have multiple stickers, license plates, tiger tails hanging out of the trunk, flags, on and on and on.

i am not being snarky here, i am seriously curious about why this seems to be so centered on auburn fans.

any ideas?

Martin Prado: Bat Man

Keep your eyes on the bat.

Another version, just in case you think you’re seeing things.

From Wednesday, September 12, 2007 against the Mets @ Shea; your daily dose of YouTube video.

football!!!! (the real kind)

okay, if you read my personal blog you will know that i am a huge fan of football (alright, soccer for those of you who must) and manchester united in particular.

just wanted to remind you, know that the english premier league season is in full swing, and the draw has been completed for the uefa champions league, that atlanta has one of the best places in the world to take in a football match.

the brewhouse cafe in little 5 on moreland ave was nominated by the us soccer federation as one of the 5 best soccer bars in the country.

it’s everything you could want – multiple tv’s, great breakfast (don’t forget those english matches start early), great staff, and a great crowd.

seriously, come out and join us. the atmosphere for a big match can’t be beat and you’ll find intelligent, knowledgeable fans ready to teach you all you need to know about the game.

i’ll be there saturday at noon for manchester united vs sunderland.

this oughta help him.

coming out in support of michael vick is one ron artest.

“I want to call him and support him, you know, be there for him,” Artest said. “[He] lied and then came back and apologized to everybody, I felt that was classy. … I was touched that he took full responsibility. I felt that was a real man. I know for a fact he’ll come out a better person.”

it bring to mind an old saying…

‘with friends like these…..’

ah yes, who can forget ron artest.

Champions!

Ok, so Warner Robins* isn’t exactly metro Atlanta, but can’t a man be happy that at least one baseball team in this state is championship-level?

While I’m at it, does the two-year Georgia champion little league streak synch up with the two-year playoff drought (yes, I know, the Braves’ season isn’t over. Yet.)?

* Fixed typo

Vick

Michael
Vick
Pleads
Guilty

Anyone else ready to move on?

When do the Falcons play a meaningful, non-preseason game?

Are you tired of those that want Michael to be the “Vick-tim” (groan)?

A Record Returns To Atlanta

Forget Number 25* and his (now) 758*, I’m talking about Bobby Cox’s new gold standard of 132 ejections as a manager.

Way to go, Bobby. It fired up the boys last night as they kept pace with the Mets and Phillies.

Is anyone else getting concerned, though. It’s mid August and our post-All-Star surge has never really materialized.

Sure we’ve got Teixeira and we’ve had no trouble scoring runs, but outside of Smotlz and Hudson, name another starter you trust.

And the bullpen is just as questionable, with Wickman looking more and more like David Wells (in physique) every day.

I don’t know about you, but I’m still not sold on the fact that the Braves can pull it together and make the post season. Much like Mulder (Fox, not Mark), I want to believe.

Let me know what you think.

Oh, and if you’re not already a regular reader of Rowland’s Office, become one.
