We Fun: Atlanta, GA Inside Out

I’m no music critic or scenester; Hell, I don’t even see that many live bands now that I’m married with kids in the suburbs, but something about We Fun: Atlanta, GA Inside Out has me very intrigued and excited. I think I’ve only heard of some of these bands in passing (I know; shame on me) but I like rooting for the little guy, and there all little guys here.

pandora’s box, redux.

back in february i wrote about tim westergren founder of pandora internet radio being in atlanta (metroblogging atlanta here. the evening ended up being one of the most interesting and entertaining events i have been to all year.

in my review of the talk on my own blog i wrote:

tim did not disappoint. he told a great story about how pandora and the music genome project was created. but more importantly he totally responded to the passion of the users/listeners. and they were passionate. one guy described pandora as ‘leveling the playing field’ for artists and genres that don’t attract big marketing attention.

so tim is coming back to atlanta on thursday night. he’ll be speaking, answering questions and of course, collecting music for inclusion on pandora’s recommendation service.

i highly recommend checking it out if you are a music or technology nut. pandora is fascinating for it’s impact on both the music industry and the technology that is required to run it’s service.

The ATL gets a new slogan; theme-song

Statewide Drought + “Re”Brand Atlanta (see here and here) = more appropriate theme-song for Atlanta?

Because they’re thirsty in Atlanta.

And yes, I have a soft spot in my heart for The Bandit, as I’ve blogged this song previously.

Other bloggers have suggested alternate songs, but I’m sticking to my guns.

so you say you want to hear some good music this weekend, but you don’t feel like dropping $100+ to hang out with a bunch of smelly kids in a field in south fulton county?

do i have the solution for you or what?

i have written extensively about atlanta-based roots rock band the beggar’s guild because, well, i am a fan and i want more of you to become fans.

anyway, here is a chance to check them out on friday in a good, intimate venue. the guys will be opening up for the blue mountain reunion tour this friday at star community bar in little 5.

i talked to jon chalden, beggar’s guild drummer, and he tells me they have all sorts of new songs they have been working on for an upcoming lp, so the show promises to be a pretty good one, filled with new stuff.

tbg go on about 10 pm, so get there early so you don’t miss their set.

just in case you need more convincing, here are a couple of mp3’s to wet your whistle, including one live track –

the beggar’s guild – minnesota (always leaving)

the beggar’s guild – only gets better – live at vinyl

BET Hip Hop Awards

The BET Hip Hop Awards are being held this Saturday at the Civic Center. I am out of town, which is kind of unfortunate, because I’m guessing there will be lots of great people-watching and famous peeps sightings to be had over the weekend.

Awards start at 4pm and end about 8 pm, but there will be street closings in the area throughout the day. Performers include Nelly, TI, Kanye West, and others. Notably missing in my mind? Female performers. (See the performers list here.)

More info on the awards and traffic.

Adam Franklin

I loved the Shoegazer stuff of the early 90’s. I will admit it – I still have a bit of a Ride problem. I could listen to Nowhere and Going Blank Again on repeat for, like, forever. But I digress.

Seems a former member of Swervedriver, Adam Franklin, is doing the solo thing now, and is making an appearance at Criminal Records tonight for an in-store performance. I know absolutely nothing about his solo stuff, but it’s free, so i might have to check it out. Just for old time’s sake.

last chance to see the orchestra in atlanta in 2007

yup. i’m back. sorry, i know there are a few of you who were wishing the guy who refuses to use capital letters had finally flown the coop, but if you have been following my saga then you will know that things have been a little hectic in my world.

none of that has anything to do with this post though, which is simply to inform you that a group of my favorite indie rockers manchester orchestra just announced the date for their final headlining gig in atlanta for 2007.

you can see them on october 26 at the drunken unicorn.

if you have yet to catch them, you should, it’s well worth it.

plus they are blowing up everywhere (yes i used that slang, ugh, what is becoming of me) as evidenced by this picture taken at easy street records on my recent trip to seattle.

a diamond not so in the rough.

just a heads up, because i haven’t seen a ton of publicity on it. shara worden, aka my brightest diamond, is going to be doing a pretty intimate in-store at wordsmith books in decatur.

shara collaborated with/backed up genius songwriter sufjan stevens for years and toured as his opening act last year. any of you who caught her at the fox know that the opportunity to hear her in this setting is not to be missed.

for those who didn’t here is a little taste courtesy of youtube:

hunting deerhunter.

i almost went to the free deerhunter concert at lenny’s friday night, but was so worn out after an insane experience at the midtown ru-san’s that we just couldn’t bring ourselves to go back out.

apparently it wasn’t the safest place to be.

according to a post on the deerhunter blog by frontman bradford cox:

We got a friendly homecoming suprise last night in Atlanta when Lockett and I got robbed at gunpoint after our show at Lenny’s last night. We literally had just walked off the stage and I was pretty wasted. Lockett was trying to take care of me and get me home. He grabbed my guitar and my stuff and we walked to his car which was parked about a block away from Lenny’s because it was so crowded. I heard a commotion behind us but like I said I was pretty out of it. I just opened the door to the car and collapsed in the passenger seat. Then I heard all this yelling and I hear this loud metallic banging on the window and look up and there is a gun in my face and a guy yelling “get the fuck out the car man” I stumbled out and see the other guy has Lockett with his arms spread on the roof of his car and is patting him down. Lockett was begging them to leave me alone. The guy put his gun up to my temple and said “give me EVERYTHING motherfucker I aint fucking with you” I just mumbled something and he put his hands in my pants and took everything I had. My cellphone, my wallet

yikes.

well maybe andy can tell us where the mayor was while one of atlanta’s favorite indie bands was getting robbed at gunpoint after a gig that HAD to have attracted some police attention.

h/t to jamsmooth for the heads up.

no need to beg….

it’s that time of year again. 99x’s unplugged in the park is back for 2007. it’s a great lineup, and guess what?

yup, if you checked that link and the lineup then you know my favorite local band the beggar’s guild is opening up this sunday. fresh off their victory in the dave fm searcharoo contest and a killer concert at bonaroo that drummer jon chalden described this way, “[after the show] people just CRUSHED the stage, begging for CD’s, wanting to talk, and just heaping praise on us.”

yup, they are going to be big and you want to be able to say you saw them when, trust me. oh, and if you tell ’em james from metroblogging atlanta sent you, you can get in on sunday for free.

just kidding, everyone gets in to all the shows for free over the next several weeks.

beggar’s guild is going to start around 7 on sunday so get there in time….
