Tonight I ventured out into the cold to dine at the Cherokee Cattle Company in Marietta. Mysteriously enough, it’s a steakhouse, and although I didn’t order a steak, the people who did were sufficiently impressed. The place itself is loud and rustic, with plenty of people taking advantage of the $2 Margaritas and Texas license plates and taxidermy factoring prominently in the decorum.

I have to mentioned that I learned about this place from my younger brother and his college roommate who were playing at Open Mike night this evening. Cherokee Cattle Company hosts an Open Mike night every Monday, and while this was my brother’s first time there, it’s evidently pretty popular. In fact, if there are any other aspiring musicians in the house, here’s a great site with info on this and other Open Mike’s in the Atlanta area.

Last night I was vegging out in front of the tube just flipping channels around 10:30 pm and I happened to settle on an old Will & Grace episode on Atlanta’s WB. This is all fine and good, a little light comedy before hitting the hay, no big deal. Then, out of nowhere, Karen’s voice gets deeper and acquires that speaking-into-a-fan quality and the dialogue turns to SPANISH. Huh?

I watched for another 15 minutes or so and every so often the Spanish dialogue would start again and then quit just as abruptly as it began. I finally changed the channel because even though I need work on my Spanish comprehension, the dubbed voices were not exactly winners of a worldwide talent search and it was just distracting. Anyway, it got me wondering if anyone else experienced this phenomenon and/or knows if it was isolated to the W & G episode or if it affected all of the WB’s nightly programming.

I know that from my entries thus far it would appear that all I ever do is eat, and while this may be true, that’s not the only reason I seem to only be able to blog about food. See, as a very experienced college student, I feel it is my civic responsibility to enlighten my contemporaries about late night dining options outside the old staples of Taco Hell, Krystal, Waffle House and the like. While sometimes a big greasy plate of Wa Ho hashbrowns smothered and covered is exactly what you’re craving, other times we night owls need something more substantial and, dare I say, healthier?

For these occasions, I would like to recommend the R. Thomas Deluxe Grill. This restaurant offers some of your typical “munchies”-type items such as hot wings, quesadillas, and burgers, but the menu also contains options to please just about any taste. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options, breakfast served at any hour, and an impressive list of smoothies are a few of the characteristics that make R. Thomas stand out among its late night peers. The restaurant itself has a fun, eccentric vibe and (in my experiences at least) the staff is friendly and very accommodating.

Anyway, it’s worth a try if you’re out late and you’re in the mood for something a little different. There’s something weirdly satisfying about knowing you can get an Organic Grilled Soy Ginger Salmon dinner and a Dr Tate’s Herbal Blood Tonic at 4:00 on a Sunday morning if you’re so inclined.

I generally just hit The Cheesecake Factory at Perimeter mall for a cheesecake or one of their other delicious desserts to go, but the other day I had occasion to eat lunch there and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

They have a fairly comprehensive lunch menu, which is what my party ordered from. (Note: Don’t be fooled by salads labeled “lunch portion”, because I ate until I couldn’t eat any more and still had to take half of my cobb salad for a late supper.) It wasn’t terribly crowded (which according to the host is par for the weekday lunch hour course) and the service was excellent, so we got in and out of there in right at an hour. The only drawback is it’s kind of loud in the dining area, so if you’re in the mood for a quiet, peaceful lunch you may want to look elsewhere.

Be sure to pick up a slice of cheesecake to share on your way out. Your coworkers will thank you.

On our way home from On The Bricks last night, my friends and I stopped at the BP Connect on North Ave at Spring St (across from The Varsity) and I just have to recommend their fabulous sandwiches. For what is essentially a gas station/convenience store, they have a great selection of breads, meats, and cheeses along with all the fixings assembled to your order.

It was only a little after midnight when we were there last night, but I’ve been served with friends who go to college within walking distance much later so I’m pretty sure you can get a sandwich there 24 hours/day. Also, in my experience there is alway a visible police/security presence at every hour of the day, so even though the general area itself is a little shady, I always feel safe there even by myself. All in all, it’s a good place for hungry students to go after a long night of, uh, studying.

I am in the process of relocating to an apartment in Kennesaw right down the street from Town Center mall. Last night, on my very first night in my new apartment, I got a visit from the local police department.

My friend and I were jolted from our mellow night of movie watching at around midnight by a pounding on the door. I was somewhat relieved to find that it was one of Kennesaw’s finest and not an ax murderer, but now the question was what did he have to say to us at this late hour of the evening?

“Are you playing kickball up here?” he asked, in that same disapproving tone that I use with my cats when they poop outside the litterbox.

I thought maybe it was a trick question, or that Cobb County has some sort of ordinance against the sport of kickball, but once we assured him that we had not been playing kickball, he left. It was odd.

Anyway, I don’t know much about this area yet. Can anyone recommend a cozy little pub ’round here?
