there’s a funny thing about free gift bags — they’re never free. you always have to buy something in order to get a gift bag. so in essence, a gift bag is never free. but some gift bags are more coveted than others. Clinique’s free-gift-with-purchase is one of them. as i see it, if the items in the gift bag cost more than the minimum amount of purchase and contain stuff you can actually use, then the “free” gift bags are so worth it. is Neiman’s free gift from their The Hip Event a coveted one? you betcha!

for a mere $350 worth of purchase from their Contemporary and Theory departments, you get a free tote filled with the following goodies:

a theory canvas bag
a marc jacob cosmetic case
an elie tahari black tanktop
a seven for all mankind white tanktop
a juicy couture tshirt
vince headband
cynthia steffe compact mirror
diane von furstenberg play cards
rock and republic headband
christopher blue canvas belt
a laundry by shelli segal candle votive

there’s only one bad thing about this… they’re out of the totes! even online! what a shame!
I went there last week to pick up some stuff and the parking lot was empty. Now on the border of Duluth and Alpharetta (by the Chattahoochee River), I witnessed a Whole Foods get built from the ground up. It took less than 6 months. It had its grand opening last week (Sep 21st). Though I’m sad that Harry’s Whole Foods is now closed, it’s been replaced by this new Whole Foods closer to where I live. Check it out:

fall is in the air and that means the Duluth Fall Festival is just around the corner. held during the last weekend in September every year, the DFF started in 1983 and is one of the best and biggest fall festivals in the state. i’ve been going for several years now and have never been disappointed. so go check it out this year — September 30 to October 1 at the historic Downtown Duluth. the event is so well organized that finding a parking space is not that of a big deal. here’s a tip i’m sure you’d appreciate: Duluth Police is one of the strictest in the state. they will give you a ticket for going 1 mile over the speed limit especially around the downtown Duluth area and Pleasant Hill. also, be careful at the Pleasant Hill and Peachtree Industrial Blvd intersection which has cameras in place. running a yellow light there will guarantee you a ticket in the mail. as well as blocking an intersection, improper lane changes, or not stopping at the railroad track on Pleasant Hill. how do you think they fund their beautiful city and numerous new unmarked vehicles including bicycles, SUVs, pick-up trucks, and sedans. they’re an award-winning city for nothing. anyway, have fun in Duluth but obey traffic laws at all times!

I don’t know about you guys but I’m an egg person. Eggs were a staple at the dinner table while I was growing up. It was fairly common to see dinner served with pan-fried steak, white steamed rice, and fried eggs dousled with lots of Heinz ketchup. Yep, eggs with ketchup. The best! But I digress…

TOPH out in Duluth serves huge, fluffy six-egg omelettes made from scratch. I’m telling you, these omelettes were humongous!

Another must-try is the Dutch Baby — oven-baked German pancakes served with lemon wedges, butter, and powdered sugar.

Although prices run on the steep side for breakfast fare from a joint located in a strip mall, all menu items are prepared fresh on site. Even the whipped cream is made from scratch daily. Almost all entrees are served with three buttermilk pancakes. Avoid the early morning weekend crowd when the wait can be up to two hours long. Service is always great.

A little hole-in-the-wall Korean restaurant in the midst of Buford Highway, 88 Tofu House offers the best no-frills Korean fare in town. We’ve been regulars of this place for over 10 years and they really serve good, fresh food. Situated in a converted stand-alone Arby’s building just inside the perimeter, Tofu 88 (as what people in the know call this place) underwent a major renovation a couple of years ago. Gone are the dank atmosphere and maroon tables. The place is now bright and airy thanks to new hardwood floors and pine-colored wooden tables with barbeque pits in the middle.

Specialties include delicious tofu soup — soft, creamy tofu in broth with choice of meat or seafood and assorted vegetables served boiling hot and available either mild, medium, and insanely hot. The barbequed short ribs (galbi-gui) are finger-lickin’ good and best eaten with the complimentary bowl of steamed white rice or the red rice with red beans. For those wanting a one-dish meal, do try the Bibim Bap: hashed rice topped with meat and assorted veggies such as mushrooms, carrots, and bean spouts and served on a hot stone pot. Each order comes with the customary appetizers served in little plates and bowls and usually consists of kimchi, spicy cucumbers, steamed bean sprouts, sweet boiled potatoes, seaweed salad, and fried fish.

Entrees start at $6. No alcohol served. Open 24 hours a day. Visa and Mastercard accepted. Reservations not taken. Ample parking space.
