Rain in our Future…

You thought the previous storms were bad? I was just reading an article in the AJC about how this next storm coming is even stronger. That’s right. No break! The next storm Wilma is heading right for FL and that will bring us some wet days ahead.

“Forecasters said Wilma was stronger than the devastating Labor Day hurricane that hit the Florida Keys in 1935, the strongest Atlantic hurricane to make landfall on record.”

Hopes are that it will lose a lot of its strength before it hits land, and that it will continue to head east so that the already storm impacted areas (further west) get a little break… but with our luck lately …. might it not head straight for Atlanta? Either way, we are expected to get some rain in the days ahead.

Chirp Chirp…… all quiet. I read an article this morning in the AJC [Article] Mainly it talked about how there had been a decrease in panhandling and that things seemed to be much quieter down town…. I have been down town a few times here and there, but it all seemed the same to me. Near the parks, near centennial, … near five points, underground…. I still see some Panhandling here and there…. Am I crazy? …. or am I a Panhandling magnet?

Maybe someone who is always down there can speak up? Is the media not getting a broad enough scope on the results, or am I just “lucky” with Panhandlers?

Is it a bit chili in here?

That’s right!! It’s that time of year again…. and if you are like me and can eat your weight in Chili, this event is for you!!! The world famous Atlanta Chili Cook Off!!! I am not much of a cooker… but I am much of an eater. I have been to this once before and was not dissapointed (until the next day…from over eating).

So here is some more info:

When: October 1 @ 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Where: Stone Mountain Park
Cost: $8 parking or $35 annual parking permit. Entry fee $10; free ages 12 and younger

Dekalb kicks out Red Cross?

This morning I read an article about the Red Cross vacating the relief center in Dekalb County. Apparently there were some issues with the relief service that was being provided. Although the Red Cross was giving out food and clothing (and money in the form of checks), the disorganization was arousing a lot of complaints. The CEO of Dekalb, Vernon Jones, made a public complaint with a letter he released. Here is a small excerpt:

“Your presence as it is now is hindering our efforts to help the same people. It is in our best interest to conduct our operations separately from now on,”

This was one of the largest relief centers in the southeast and has been open only for one week. I know that there is some inherent disorder in these types of situations, but it is a shame that this ended this way. Does anyone else have any more information on this?

Katrina : GA Impact

I have seen a lot of news about the effort going forward on Katrina relief, and am glad to see some positive impacts. I do think that it is important to keep in mind that these efforts will have long lasting effects on the nation. I am hopeful that we can learn from this and be better prepared for the future.

Tonight, I did see tonight a story about one possible Georgia impact we may be seeing. The story was called “Katrina May Derail Ga. Road Repairs” I am sure this is but one impact that Georgia (and Atlantians) will feel. But don’t these impacts help us to not forget….?

What are we waiting for…?

I have heard a lot of complaints about how the New Orleans disaster is being handled. I have also heard about how this situation was predicted, and how there were no good plans in place to help after the fact. I know that the situation is more complicated than we can see from a distance, but it is frustrating when you see several states offering assistance, but no one is taking them up on it. Mayor Franklin says that Georgia has had teams ready to go and assist since Tuesday and has been offering….. she states:

“I’m not really sure what we’re waiting for. Are we waiting for everyone to die or are we serious about an evacuation?”

I want to give them [The people in charge] the benefit of a doubt… but isn’t every mistake costing lives? Should they not have jumped at all the offers of help from all the surrounding states? Am I crazy, or am I missing something? Can anyone out there shed some light on this?

Perdue brings out the big guns

It seems that things with the Gas pricing situation escalated a bit. By 6 pm Perdue was making a new press statement and declaring a state of emergency. State of Emergency? …that’s the stuff movies are made of!! The article goes on to say:

“…retailers who violate the law could be hit with a fine of up to $5,000 for each person they overcharge and up to $15,000 if the victim is a senior citizen.”

“I want it stopped, and I want it stopped now”

Apparently this was also done during Hurricane Ivan to prevent Hotels/Motels from price gouging. Will it work? The article also states that they can track this by the receipts logged at the Gas terminals. Maybe now people will calm down? …. and Gas stations will think twice about gouging.

Of course my favorite part of this article was where “Perdue encouraged companies to allow more employees to tele-work this week.” I hope my boss is reading this… :-)
