Anyone rememember the Festival of Trees?

So, this is ungodly late.  I mean, its almost the middle of January!  But your Christmas lights are still up, so I can still post about holiday stuff.

Anyone remember the Festival of Trees?  What happened to it?  The thing was huge – it drew 130,000 in 1999 and rented out the World Congress Center at least until 2005. It donated tons of money to Children’s Healthcare over the years.

I remember it being a big deal when I was a kid.  Maybe that says more about the stuff my mom ended up volunteering for back in the day, but the World Congress Center isn’t for rinky-dink events, y’know? I haven’t heard peep about it recently.

I’m sure there are some old-school Atlanta folks who know what I’m talking about here.  Anyone know what happened?

I loved it as a child!! I have no idea why they chose to cancel it this past year but I know that they did. Maybe too many Scrooges out there…

I remember this event as a kid and I so loved it. It brought me such joy and peace as a child. I really wanna take my kids but I dont think its as big and fabulous as it was. I do know that they are still having it in Atlanta somewhere.

Festival of the trees was great! I absolutely LOVED it as a kid. It’s such a bummer that they canceled it, and i have NO clue why. I guess that’s not much help, but still, it’s nice to remember with others. My guess is that funding was probably cut somehow, or maybe attendance dropped and continued to drop…

    Found what happened on wikipedia!!!!

The parade also served as the opening event for the nine-day Festival of Trees, also benefiting CHoA, and originally held at the Georgia World Congress Center.[5][6] Even though the Festival of Trees left its longtime home in 2007 [7], the Children’s Christmas Parade remained in downtown Atlanta continuing a nearly three-decade Atlanta tradition. The festival, which started in 1979, was canceled in 2009, after having been drastically reduced in previous years. [8] In 2008, the “festival” was a gala hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design satellite campus in Atlanta.[9]

I remember The Festival of Trees! We used to volunteer there when I was in Girl Scouts. It was such a wonderful event and my mom used to decorate trees that were auctioned off for what used to be called Egelston. Such a fun and happy time and it really did do a lot. I miss it and I’d really like to take my daughter!

I performed at the Festival of trees at least 4 years in a row. I would love to take my kids, it always seems to get me in the Christmas spirit. It was always nice to go to an indoor Christmas event. So sad it isn’t happening anymore :(
