First, there is an enormous difference between graffiti, which is artwork that someone spends time and effort on, something someone (and a community) can take pride in, something that beautifies a space (see lots of examples in the krog tunnel) ... and tagging, which is what has overrun cabbagetown as of late. I'm not usually one to judge, but when the churches say "Fuck your God," the sidewalks say "fuck you," my trash can says "Slayer" (ok, that kind of made me laugh and I wasn't too concerned with it) - but that's not art, that's not graffiti, it's just self-centered crap that someone sprays permanently on other people's personal property. That doesn't even get into the potential for gang issues, or the broken window theory. For the most part, lately, the "graffiti" in cabbagetown has come from little suburban punks coming in to spray sweet obscenities on the walls of me and my neighbors. The two kids Rodney caught drove in from Palmetto (at 2 in the morning saying "we didn't know it was illegal").

Rodney is clearly a little off (to say the least) and shouldn't be attacking people but he's been here for 20-plus years, a sort of fixture in the neighborhood, and I don't think he'd fit in very well in Alpharetta. He was actually featured in another AJC story after the tornado that I can't find for the life of me - he was helping build a wheelchair ramp for someone on Powell. They described him as a lovable eccentric who looks scary till you get to know him (see his post on the ajc article about him, he commented recently).

Oh, also, there was a big neighborhood paint-over-the-tagging day last weekend that was quite controversial because it ended up painting over some murals on Wylie that had actually been commissioned (see wrenyu's complaint about the ugly pea green wall). Just in the interest of fair reporting, here is the response from c-town Public Safety chair on the Wylie wall:

"Ultimately it was decided that we needed a complete reclamation of the wall so that we could start anew. We are going to propose an ongoing public art display for the wall at the next CNIA meeting that I hope some of the affected artists will be interested in.

Several areas of these more artistic works had been tagged over for a few weeks now. The taggers did revere them for a period of time but apparently nothing is sacred which absolutely stinks. The true artists are victims here as well."

This is an interesting post that has a lot of potential for conversation - no one moves to cabbagetown that doesn't like graffiti. It's a matter of trash being tagged all over the place that brings down property values, arguably invites criminals, and makes it a generally uglier place (of course, that last one is a matter of opinion). Wow, sorry for the length, just got a lot to say ...

Also, happy to see you guys posting again on metblogs! Keep em coming!

Thank you!

I now live across from an ugly pea green wall.

I love graffiti and hate vigilante justice.
