breaking news?
there was a time when the phrase ‘breaking news’ used to imply that something major that would effect my life or the life of the nation had happened.
there was a time when i used to get emails with the headline ‘breaking news’ and it would make me breathe faster as i wondered if some major catastrophe had just unfolded.
no longer.
at least for someone that gets email updates from the atlanta journal-constitution i have now become deadened to the phrase ‘breaking news.’
case in point i bring you the below image from my inbox. apparently when a pretty decent baseball player, who once had a role in bringing a championship to the home team has his house burned by a wildfire that has been raging for days, which by the way is on the other side of the country, that qualifies as ‘breaking news.’
I had tuna fish for lunch. Alert the press!
Breaking News! This annoys local blogger and mother also!
Seriously, it seems like people were so glued to their tvs after 9/11 that the news outlets figured out that if they put BREAKING NEWS!!!! in big red banners across the screen that we would be more likely to stay glued.
I think it’s all just part of the FoxNewsification of the news channels. Drives me crazy. Especially when it concerns sports or entertainment news.
I find it humorous that CNN seemed to start using the Fox-like design on their screen, but they don’t do it as well as Fox does, and it makes them look silly. I keep expecting Wolf Blitzer to come out with a top hat and cane and start doing A Chorus Line one day in The Situation Room.
Which also drives me crazy. Too.Many.TVs.In.One.Room.
Ahh CNN. How far the mighty have fallen. I knew that cable news was dead when I was watching CNN in a restaurant after work and the next 4 hours of programming were all about Paris Hilton (this was the day she was released from jail).
Did I mention that this was “breaking news” on their website too?
yeah, the ajc outdoes everyone though. they once sent me a breaking news email to tell me that a particular college coach was NOT leaving his job…
