I don’t know about you crazy kids, but Saturday afternoon I’ll be downtown watching the DragonCon parade and snapping pics with my friend Kelly.

Dragon*Con is America’s largest, multi-media, popular arts convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film.

The parade route “follows Peachtree Street from Woodruff Park (at Auburn Avenue) to the Hyatt, then continues down Baker Street and ends on Courtland Street at the Marriott and Hilton.”

If you’re not up for a 10am parade, alternate options for shutter bugs include a love-in/photo stroll type dealie the Atlanta Flickr group is planning Saturday night.

If you’re interested in other tracks, the event and program information can be found on the official Dragon*Con site.

Anyone else planning on going out to either watch or participate in any of the events? Have you been in years past? Special advice and/or good stories?

I attended DragonCon for the first time last year but was unable to see the parade. For the uninitiated among you Flickr has come to the rescue…

I will be attending again this year and hope to have as much fun as I did last year. I don’t know what could possibly top seeing Denise Crosby aka Tasha Yar from Star Trek the Next Generation inebriated and climbing over a life-size Jabba the Hut statue, but I’ll soon find out.

I attend DragonCon every year… this year, I have several speaking gigs in the Space and Sciences Tracks: [ http://dragoncon.org/dc_guest_detail.php?id=972 ], [ http://dragoncon.org/es_tracks.php#SPACE ].

For DragonCon virgins, be prepared. This is a MASSIVE event, with 40,000 slightly odd people jamming three huge hotels. Allow more time than you normally would for everything (parking, eating, moving between hotels…)

My timing’s off this year; I might be able to get to Friday, but that’s probably it. It certainly won’t be the 4-day sens-dep session of prior years. I’m a bit excited to see how the Mariott’s renovations are going, though.

I’ve been to the show a couple of years in a row, but to this day I have never seen the parade. This is also the first year I’m not actually working at the show, manning a booth. (Though I do have business meetings this year — Dragon*Con is a work event for me.)

It’s a hell of a gloriously weird show, though. The seminars, the booths, the artist tables, all that stuff is secondary to the fashion show that fills the hotel lobbies and interstitial spaces of the show. Get out. See it. To do otherwise is to declare yourself too cool to gawk at a pop-culture Mardi Gras. And that’s just crazy talk.

(Not YOU, Maigh, you understand. Just, uh, the understood too-cool “you” who made fun of me in high school.)
