I think Annie has it right, the vast majority of the AJC readers are in METRO Atlanta and they vote on what they know. What they don't know are all the cool/good indie shops around town. Though I will say Mellow Mushroom is good. The best, maybe not, but good, yes.

This has been the topic of much discussion in my hood lately. It is pretty sad. The AJC should be called the Metro Atlanta Journal and Constitution, because this has little to do with people who are knowledgeable about the city itself. It is a reflection of their sad, sad readership.

Creative Loafing's Best Of's are so much better. Even our own Metroblogging best of discussions have been interesting and unusual.

Taco Fucking Bell. Egads.

hah, yeah, tiffany i get that. it's why i suggest perhaps they need a new way to do the survey.

seriously when taco bell makes the top five of anything GOOD, the list loses every ounce of credibility it might have...

The AJC is apparently not witty enough to add a simple disclaimer to state that all their voting readers are complete morons.

you *do* realize that the nominations are submitted by readers, right? and that the top *reader-submitted nominations* become the finalists... and that those are then voted on *by the readers.*

in other words: don't (completely) blame the ajc staff for the rampant ignorance and love of bland, franchised mediocrity. seriously: many of those folks are witty, interesting and sophisticated enough to know that imperial fez ain't indian.

as for its readers... well...

The ridiculousness goes further. Taco Mac is listed as the winner for 3 nightlife categories.

http://welcometoterminus.blogspot.com/2007/07/best-of-big.html

I imagine there in this area who are affluent, eat out 3-5 times a week, and are unaware that Chops and Bones exist, let alone a Rathbun Steak. I'd be curious to know how often the people who voted make it into the city for anything other than business or shopping.

Also, I've observed that there's a desire for people to believe that wherever they go, that place is the best, e.g. The kids from my high school were much more attractive/intelligent/funny than the kids at other high schools. This probably applies to restaurants as well...despite the pretty average food, it's hard to dislike Maggianos. I suspect a lot of people vote for it less because it's the best Italian restaurant, but more because it's the only one they go to.
