check out this great italian place – the olive garden!!!

it’s been widely reported on these blog thingies that the ajc in it’s ‘best of the big a’ contest picked morrocan restaruant imperial fez as best indian restaurant.

but megan’s comment on the krog street post got me wondering what other fine institutions has been selected as finalists by the ajc.

so i spent some time poking around and they really did picks some winners, and i thought i would share them with you:

apparently maggiano’s is the best place for italian food in atlanta, narrowly beating out finalists ippolitios and god-help-us, the olive garden.

apparently if you are looking for really good pizza in the big a you’ll do no better than the mellow mushroon, although finalists pizza hut and papa john’s are a good bet. i bet domino’s is feeling pretty pissed off about being left off. and what? no cici’s pizza buffet?

if it is take-out you are after, finalist chili’s is sure to provide some delectable dishes for you.

of course if seafood is more your fare, there’s always the amazingly fresh, high-quality fish and shellfish at red lobster and pappadeaux’s – both finalilsts.

you say you like steak? well finalists longhorn and outback have cuts of beef that can’t be beat; except maybe by winner ruth’s chris; apparently the best steak in atlanta.

and finally, i know you may be on a budget and are just dying to know where to go for some great cheap eats. well look no further than finalist taco bell – one suggestion though, don’t go to the taco bell in suwanee.

wow, i am almost speechless after that review.

now far be it for me to tell the cox media empire how to run it’s business, but perhaps the folks at the ajc may want to reconsider their methodology for this award?

then again, maybe pizza hut really is one of the five best places to get a slice in the atl….

Is this a joke? I think I’m going to hurl.

I imagine there in this area who are affluent, eat out 3-5 times a week, and are unaware that Chops and Bones exist, let alone a Rathbun Steak. I’d be curious to know how often the people who voted make it into the city for anything other than business or shopping.

Also, I’ve observed that there’s a desire for people to believe that wherever they go, that place is the best, e.g. The kids from my high school were much more attractive/intelligent/funny than the kids at other high schools. This probably applies to restaurants as well…despite the pretty average food, it’s hard to dislike Maggianos. I suspect a lot of people vote for it less because it’s the best Italian restaurant, but more because it’s the only one they go to.

The ridiculousness goes further. Taco Mac is listed as the winner for 3 nightlife categories.

you *do* realize that the nominations are submitted by readers, right? and that the top *reader-submitted nominations* become the finalists… and that those are then voted on *by the readers.*

in other words: don’t (completely) blame the ajc staff for the rampant ignorance and love of bland, franchised mediocrity. seriously: many of those folks are witty, interesting and sophisticated enough to know that imperial fez ain’t indian.

    as for its readers… well…

The AJC is apparently not witty enough to add a simple disclaimer to state that all their voting readers are complete morons.

hah, yeah, tiffany i get that. it’s why i suggest perhaps they need a new way to do the survey.

seriously when taco bell makes the top five of anything GOOD, the list loses every ounce of credibility it might have…

This has been the topic of much discussion in my hood lately. It is pretty sad. The AJC should be called the Metro Atlanta Journal and Constitution, because this has little to do with people who are knowledgeable about the city itself. It is a reflection of their sad, sad readership.

Creative Loafing’s Best Of’s are so much better. Even our own Metroblogging best of discussions have been interesting and unusual.

    Taco Fucking Bell. Egads.

I think Annie has it right, the vast majority of the AJC readers are in METRO Atlanta and they vote on what they know. What they don’t know are all the cool/good indie shops around town. Though I will say Mellow Mushroom is good. The best, maybe not, but good, yes.

    okay, but TACO BELL??? c’mon.

It’s in my top 5 places to get food poisioning!
