More Lies From The Man
Fun with the 14th Street Bridge Construction Project
The 14th Street Bridge Construction Project has begun. For the initial 10 – 14 months of the project, impact to commuters will be negligible. The initial period involves realigning Williams Street and building a utility tunnel under I-75/I-85.
Commencing as early as 2nd Quarter (April – June) 2008, the 14th Street Bridge will be demolished and new bridge constructed. During reconstruction, the 14th Street Bridge will be out of use for approximately 16 to 18 months. Motorists will have to use alternate routes, primarily 10th Street and the new 17th Street Bridge, to reach Midtown destinations.
The purpose of the project is to accommodate new under passing northbound exit ramp to the 17th Street Bridge, to improve the pedestrian environment, and to improve traffic safety and operations at the 14th Street interchange.

Thanks to my pal Kelly for the 411.
The first lies I spot are the time frame and the impact – which others can you identify?
That foolish line about “improving the pedestrian environment.” You have to have one before you improve it.
I like their suggestion for drivers to simply take “the new 17th street bridge to reach their midtown destinations” . . . just don’t go west, that will take you straight to the Disneyland-with-no-Space-Mountain hell that is Atlantic Station.
I’ll go ahead and say that the “use 10th and 17th” will eventually be a lie. I’m sure the DOT can dream up some ridiculous reason to close one or both of those streets daily; likely during the entire time that the 14th street bridge is closed.
Remind me again when they are planning on re-paving all of the connector? The day after the 14th st project starts perhaps?
Does that mean the cop cars will stop parking in the bike lanes on 17th Street??? (In my dreams.)
And for those in Atlanta who can’t read, yes that HOV lane on 17th is for buses only.
