Zoo Atlanta – To Stay Put.

To update a previous post by Maigh, et al, Zoo Atlanta is apparently staying put and not moving away from the Grant Park area. $200,000,000.00 later, that is. Personally, I’m very glad. I’d be happy to donate to the Zoo project and would love to see our zoo be the best in the nation.

“The zoo considered relocating to a larger plot at an old fairgrounds in south Atlanta. President and C-E-O Dennis Kelly said today that it instead will renovate its 40-acre site in Grant Park near downtown” | Story |.

Thank you Wilford Brimley or Teddy Roosevelt, as the case may be

So after last night’s Justin Timberlake concert at Philips (spare me the laughter) traffic was an absolute beast.

We parked in the “pigeon pit” underneath the CNN parking deck and right next to the “talent” entrance/exit of the arena. This caused all sorts of problems as a cop who looked like Wilford Brimley/Teddy Roosevelt, both shown below for reference, made us exit the back way onto Marietta Street.

SATYRICON, 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, DAATH and ABIGAIL WILLIAMS are scheduled to perform at the Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, April 21.”

Poor Abigil, all by herself – yeah, right | Band Site |. I think it’s time to head over to the Masquerade, especially since I’ve not been there in 3 years. | Source |

50 States in 10 Minutes

Since there are Metroblogs all over the U.S. (and the world, really) I thought this was a cool game: 50 States in 10 Minutes.

I got 48 states personally, forgetting our neighbor to the north, Tennessee, and Utah.

How many can you get?

show off your ‘love bug’

okay, a bit of a late notice on this, but you can win $1000 for doing nothing other than uploading some photos of your custom car to the ajc.

in support of the ajc autoshow the folks at our local paper are running the street2show contest.

upload photos of your custom vehicle and if you win you get $1000 and your car on display next to big boi’s.

no custom ride? you can still view and vote on the cars here.

i gotta hand it to the ajc; the site is great and it’s a well executed marketing campaign.

Annoying (Insulting? Predatory, even?) H&R Block Advertising in Atlanta

I am easily annoyed. The thing that is currently annoying me most? The two H&R Block signs I have seen up in my neighborhood. I live in the East Atlanta area. One sign is located at Flat Shoals and Bouldercrest. It reads, “I got people.” Am I the only one who finds this really insulting?

Now – Google Stacks

On the flight back into Atlanta tonight, I was looking at Google News. They have an interesting new addition called News Archive Search. So, I decided to type in Atlanta. Of course, you’ll see the typical recent stuff but, you can select date ranges in the search as well.

If you visit the page, type in Atlanta, and select “before 1910”, some rather interesting articles come up. They all appear to be mostly pay-per-view but, this search does include more newspapers than our friendly AJC. The AJC has Stacks which is pay-per-view for older articles.

I was also reading about Georgia spending a few cool million to get ready for Civil War Tourism which they believe will pick up as the 150th anniversary in 2011 gets closer. In Georgia keying on Civil War anniversary to boost tourism, AP tells the full story. The Battle of Resaca is reenacted on the battlefield in North Georgia, May 18-20. | Official Site |

Animal Cruelty Case Against Falcons Player

News broke last week about animal cruelty charges being brought against Atlanta Falcons player Jonathan Babineaux. Babineaux allegedly argued with his wife, his wife went to the movies, and when she returned, her dog was obviously injured and she immediately took the dog to an animal hospital. On the way to the hospital, the dog was vomiting blood, and it was dead on arrival. Doctors believed the injuries were caused by blunt trauma to the head. Babineaux was charged with felony cruelty to animals.

Why have we not seen any more about this case? More importantly, if Babineaux is found guilty of the crime, what will the Falcons do about it? Seems obvious to me that, if found guilty, Babineaux should be let go. Realistically, though, I’m guessing that since he made 28 tackles last season, that won’t happen.

Georgia’s Literary History Treasures

Earlier this month, the New York Times published an article about Andalusia, the home of author Flannery O’Connor in nearby Milledgeville, Ga. Sure, it’s not Atlanta, but it is a day trip from here (less than two hours) and since there is no Metroblogging Milledgeville (yet, but it has a ring to it, no?) I think it’s fair game.
