Farewell, Gasper
From AJC.com:
Gasper, the beloved beluga whale who became a star of the Georgia Aquarium, was euthanized this morning after months of declining health.
The ghost-white whale, who had fought a deadly bone disease for months, had stopped eating on his own several weeks ago and aquarium officials said at the time his chances of survival were slim.
It seemed like he was in the best care here in Atlanta, having been rescued from a poorly-kept amusement park in Mexico. I know a lot of Atlanta kids and well-wishers will be sad.
I went to the aquarium twice over the holidays with different branches of my extended family and this is terrible news.
At least there are 4 other healthy belugas, but Gasper will be missed.
The AJC.com’s Gasper “guest book” is the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. I’ve excerpted some of it on my blog.
My favorite: “Sad to hear of your untimly passing. You now join my Mother and Father in Paradise in that aquarium in the sky.”
As if the Atlanta sewers weren’t bad enough, now they’re going to try to flush a Beluga. Maybe Michael Jackson will come to Gasper’s service.
gasper loved freedom as much as americans love freedom. he didn’t love bombing arabs and asians like americans but he loved freedom. tonight we mourn gasper and freedom.
