thanks a ton, ing.

our good friends at ing, the dutch banking and investments conglomerate, decided they would do a pretty nifty marketing ploy today and give away fill-ups for atlanta drivers. all this sounds really good (and you can read about how nifty it is in this press release), unfortunately the execution of it was an abject nightmare.

they did get police to direct traffic and all but they did made some serious errors.

first they gave the gas away during rush hour. as if atlanta traffic isn’t bad enough, the last thing we need is some free gas feeding frenzy creating even more problems. second, at least one horrendous location was picked.

the one i am referring to was a shell station less than 1/4 of a mile from the off ramp from ga 400 north to old milton parkway east. so imagine all of those people that are trying to exit off of 400 running smack dab into the middle of all the people trying to get their hands on 30 bucks worth of free gas.

in the end it took me 32 minutes to get from the haynes bridge road exit on 400 to the top of the off-ramp on exit 10, a distance of about 1.5 miles. and you guys probably already know how good my commute is anyway*.

finally, next time you are going to pull a stunt that is going to seriously f with people’s commute in one of america’s busiest cities, maybe you could give the traffic reporters a little warning. they kept reporting that ‘something’ was going on on 400 north., but claimed the back up was between Holcomb and Haynes bridge (where traffice was clear) and they had no idea what was going on. a little warning would have kept those of us who cared more about getting to the office than getting some free fuel away from that intersection.

so thanks ing. i was late to work anyway, so i couldn’t stop and get your free gas, and the 32 minutes i wasted sitting in a line of cars on georgia 400 was worth a hell of a lot more in terms of lost productivity to me than the value of the gas anyway.

next time you give away free gas maybe you can start at 10:00 am instead.

p.s. – i’m still happy you are helping us put on that marathon, tho’

ING also did this promotion at I-75 and Howell Mill, an area that Wal-Mart and Selig have already defiled. It took me almost ten minutes to go the 1/4 mile between Defoor Ave and I-75. So, I say to ING, F U!

Whoa…so it was a nightmare. I sent out a note about this to my friends to let them know about the free gas. One of them predicted the fiasco and said he was going to go a different way to work, since he usually takes Howell Mill. It sounds like it was craziness!
