absolutely nothing like madonna’s ‘like a virgin’ (not that there is anything wrong with that)

i am right this moment listening to the new cd ‘like a virgin losing a child’ by atlanta rock band manchester orchestra (warning that’s a myspace link in case you are morally opposed to that or something.) when i finally get around to composing my top five albums of the year post over on my blog, i can completely guarantee that it will be on there. the only question is how high.

i first heard the song ‘alice and interiors’ in one of the mixtapes that rich at cable and tweed made of atlanta music and immediately purchased the ep “you brainstorm, i brainstorm, but brilliance needs a good editor’ and have listened to it way too much since. it was THE song that stood out for me as belonging to a band i needed to no more about.

and other than a few breaks to listen to some christmas-y music sufjan stevens style i have pretty much listened to “like a virgin losing a child’ non-stop since picking it up at criminal records last week.

of course you don’t have to take my word for it; people much more eloquent than me at reviewing music are loving this thing too. paulie writes a very positive review over at cable and tweed and ally over at confessions of a music addict rates it as her #1 album of the year, writing:

i can’t quit listening to this album. i’m actually a little ashamed of just how high my itunes play count is. it’s that good. andy hull is one of the few songwriters that literally makes me weak in the knees with his music.

(both blogs have some mp3’s to try, btw.)

and paste magazine writes in their ‘4 to watch’ piece on manchester orchestra:

The maturity and conceptual depth of 20-year-old frontman Hull’s songwriting are years beyond his age, and the band’s current lineup has the chemistry, chops and personality to deftly pull off his tunes.

now seriously, folks, with that many hip, cool people agreeing with me, would i really be steering you wrong here?

i will admit i have yet to see manchester orchestra live, something always seems to come up when they are playing, but i plan to rectify that on jan 6 when they will be playing the 585.

great album, guys. keep ’em coming.

I checked out Manchester Orchestra after Paulie mentioned them a while back and have been listening to them a lot. I have yet to see them live, but it’s on my to-do list. I’ve also been wanting to go to the 585, so now I have a good excuse. Thanks James

I haven’t been to The 585 yet either. No chance I’ll be at the Manchester Orchestra show though. I’ll be in New Orleans at the time.
