Atlanta Walk/Run for Animals

I recently wrote this about my venture into the world of running. Well, the time has come to put my money where my mouth is and run an actual race. While I feel pretty comfortable with competition, I never ran a race before, so I thought i would start small and pick a local 5K.

I figured it would give me a goal to work towards, and also keep me honest and consistent about my workouts. I chose one that took place back in September (East Atlanta Strut 5K), but had a death in the family, so I never made it. I just got around to picking another: The 2006 Atlanta Walk/Run for Animals & Expo, put on by the Atlanta Animal Alliance.

Being a little nervous about my first foray into competition, my thought on the matter was that the less intimidating the race is, the better. What could be less intimidating than running for animals? Pet people are going to be compassionate and sweet, right? Plus, some of them will be walking, so I know I won’t be the slowest person there. (I hate to be last. Hate it.) Not to mention that people can run with their dogs. Talk about dead weight! There are some fat dogs out there, people! I am a dog person, so it will be kind of cool to check out all the pups. I also love my dog very much, which is why I am not making his old, arthritic ass run with me.

This is all to say that if you are looking forward to something to do tomorrow, you can come make fun of me and the fat dogs. In addition to the running, and the walking, and the dogs running and walking, the expo part of it includes: a blessing of the animals, canine demonstrations, free food and drink, a memory wall for deceased or absent pets, pet vendors, and dogs available for adoption. Don’t worry, dear husband, i realize that the deal is if I want to bring home another animal, I must give up an existing animal or child.

And, um, did I mention that there will be DOG COSTUME CONTESTS? Any more questions? This is funny stuff, and for a good cause.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing about the hills. Might be painful, but I will survive. Don’t know if i will ever be ready for a marathon. We’ll see.
