one atlantan i truly am sad to see closing up shop

the ajc is reporting today that after 9 years, seeger’s will be closing for good on august, 19. this really sucks. seeger’s has been on my list for years to try. in fact my mom promised me dinner at any restaurant i wanted if i quit smoking for over a year and since i passed that milestone months ago, seeger’s was going to be my pick. looks like now i will never get the chance.

according the ajc, all may not be over for guenther seeger and atlanta –

While Seeger says he may move to another city, there is at least one scenario that will keep him in Atlanta and at his restaurant. Local restaurateur Bob Amick claims he is in discussions with Seeger to buy a claim in the restaurant.

“There is no final deal, but we are exploring options,” says Amick, whose local restaurants include high-volume scenesters such as One Midtown Kitchen, Two Urban Licks and Piebar.
If this plan goes forward, Amick says, “We would close the restaurant [for a period of time] to repurpose it and make it more accessible to diners.” He added, “Guenter is one of the ten best chefs in America; it’s really in Atlanta’s interest to keep him here.”

i hope this is true. bob amick and guenther seeger partnering would be like a meeting of two of the most powerful gods in the atlanta food pantheon.

but wih amick in charge, seegers will never be the high-end continental restaurant that was mentioned along with places like jean-georges and daniel (which i have eaten at in a seven course four hour extravaganza that was the most amazing culinary experience of my life.) it’ll be great but instead the décor will be more modern, the food less expensive and more experimental.

quite sad. wish i had had a chance to try it, well maybe i will before it goes.

and oh boy, have i just opened myself up to a whole bunch of ‘you uncaring bourgeoisie swine” comments or what?
