A bevy of bikers
Not the motorcycle type, the spandex shorts type of bikers, were en masse last night as I made my way to The Highlander. Travelling north on Peachtree Street, they formed a human/bicycle serpentine dragon wending it’s way east through midtown, turning on Tenth Street just ahead of me while I was stopped at the light.
Some bikers guarded the intersection, ensuring the safe passage of the rest and blocking through traffic, despite the fact that the light had changed. They repeated this behavior as they turned briefly south onto Monroe and then onto Virginia.
I craned my neck to see their methodical, deliberate and snake-like form climb the hill and out of view.
Who were these night riders that inspired my poetic (or not) words?
Ah, your typical “share the road” types – demand their “rights” on the road but pretend that traffic laws don’t actually apply to them.
Since it was the last Friday of the month, my guess would be the Atlanta chapter of Critical Mass…
yes it was critical mass.
“share the road” types?
Whoa… don’t put me in a box, if I had my way, I wouldn’t share anything.
CM it was indeed, one night a month we own the road in our own special way.
These were not the “share the road” bikers – they were the “same road, same rules” bikers. They choose not to follow the rules however.
I didn’t mean to open up a can of worms regarding the organization, I just wanted to know who they were. I’m actually quite impressed that they were as organized and autonomous for such a large group.
And none of the motorists I was around honked or acted aggressively towards the bikers.
You should come ride next month! Critical Mass is open to anyone and everyone. Its a lot of fun cruising around ATL by bicycle. And it typically comes to an end in some drinking establishment or other….
