Something – new – on the radio?

Welcome to 97.1FM The River!

“We’re Atlanta’s Classic Hits station and we’re debuting with 10,000 songs in a row with no commercials! Thanks for checking us out!”

Since there is nothing new on Atlanta radio – if there IS something new on Atlanta radio, I’m willing to point it out.

The “new” 97.1 FM – The River – Classic Hits

Check it out on the dial and the Internet. I like what I’m hearing so far.

    What’s “radio”?

Yeah, it’s just what Atlanta needs. A combo of 93 and 96. The music radio market here stinks. No one is really willing to take a chance and combine multiple genres to reach out to people that don’t like only one style of music.

At least with my Sirius satellite radio I can listen to many different styles. I’ve had it for 3 years and couldn’t imagine not having it. Especially for road trips.

Atlanta does not need another heaping helping of Classic Rock. If The River were even remotely as good as Z-93 used to be, particularly during their theme weekends (all Southern Rock, all British Invasion, all Dead, etc.), I’d be impressed.

But it’s not. It’s just Dave FM with the “time period dial” set back a couple of decades. And I guarantee it’s mostly driven off satellite with nary an actual DJ for 75% of the day.*

    * – Purely a jaded and baseless assumption.

Tony, that’s right, I’ve had Sirius for two years now and it’s just terrific. You can only listen to the 47th incarnation of 99x before realizing that Atlanta radio sucks.

The only good radio is the Saturday night jazz guy (albeit a national show) on 90.1 FM. I mean, it’s almost a reason to stay home on Saturday night. But Atlanta AM talk radio is decent, and Larry Munsen rocks during college football season. Other than that radio sucks.

Yes, I like the Jazz show on 90.1.

I can’t put my finger on it but, there is something different in the sound of radio stations up north and out west and radio stations in the South. I guess it’s some program directors idea of what people want to hear based on where they live. I’ve never really cared for most stations in Atlanta. Some of them play so many commercials that I just flip through the dial whenever one comes on.

I’ve become addicted to Internet radio. Live365, Real Superpass, iTunes radio, even AOL radio which features some XM content – they are all far more interesting. I even listen to BBC Radio 1 online.

Then, of course, when it’s time for news I listen to WSB AM 750. But, that ends after Clark’s show goes off.
