RuSans. I Double-Checked.

In the last week, I’ve been to two different RuSan’s. The first, over the weekend, was my first visit to any RuSan’s. What a terrifically bizarre and deliciously absurd menu. To say that I had sushi at RuSan’s might not be entirely accurate. Is the tempura Japanese bagel roll really sushi? Is the Flying Kamikaze?

The Eight-Legged Freak Maki came out of the fryer looking like a burrito-shaped macaroon or a tightly packed hot towel. Seeing it get cut up made me think of stuffed breads or, maybe, Chicken Kiev. Trying to get fried calamari and, uh, whatever the hell else was is there into my mouth in one bite was a challenge, very much like using chopsticks to pick up and eat burrito fixings fried into a rice macaroon. All very tasty and undignified of me. If there’s an elegant and respectable way to eat Eight-Legged Freak Maki, I don’t know it.

Well, I dunno if it’s art, but I like it. I like sitting in sushi bars when it’s raining outside. I like neon signs when the windows they’re in are dotted with water. I like the way people are stuffed together with the old-fashioned utensils and the modern music and the old-fashioned food and the modern clothes. I like the artistry of the chefs working back-to-back in a dry aquarium full of dead fish, surrounded by casual diners with the counter-top curved backs of The Nighthawks. It feels a little bit like an early William Gibson novel in a rain-slick sushi bar after dark. And if it doesn’t, I like to pretend it does.

Before you ask: No, I haven’t been to MF Sushi as yet. The timeless reason: $.

MF Sushi is delightful. However, my new favorite is Sushi Mania. It’s in Brookhaven, at the shopping center at Colony and Peachtree Road. Their sushi is delicious. I have never had fresher fish. The only negative thing I have to say about the place is that the name sucks. But try the Hot Night Roll! You won’t regret it.

The sky has certainly been the color of a television tuned to a dead channel lately…

Sushi Mania is the BOMB! Its my new favorite too…Spread the word, this is the best sushi in town. The fish is so fresh, the menu is creative and the couple that run the place never forget a name or a face….its a weekly treat. The Dynomite and the Crunch Rolls are the best.
