College’s support in peril over gay group

Mercer University in Georgia could soon lose its religious affiliation and one of its biggest financial backers in part because of the school’s support for a gay student group. The Georgia Baptist Convention voted Monday to sever all ties with the small Georgia university at their annual meeting. The Macon-based school and the convention have been linked since 1959. The relationship brought in millions of dollars over the years, as the convention sends the university about $2.4 million annually. A few years ago the convention donated $30 million more toward Mercer’s nursing school.

Well now. Education, Humanity and Religion – oh, it is quite the mix. It seems the Moneychangers have spoken and the benefactors have to bear the decision. Those born homosexual are, again, made a scapegoat. What a shame.

“A support group for gay students at the Macon campus of Mercer University disbanded Monday after the head of the Georgia Baptist Convention complained to school officials that the group’s existence betrayed the university’s Christian heritage.

The Mercer Triangle Symposium, the school’s first gay student group, held its final meeting Monday, said Beth Sherouse, its former president. She said she could not comment on the reasons.

Nancy David, president of the school’s student government, said about 50 people, including students, faculty and administrators, attended the meeting to show support. “There is a lot more to it than we’re allowed to talk about,” David said.”

I bet there is, Ms. David. Money is a harsh mistress.
