I’ve never particularly had very much of a sweet tooth, but sometimes you just have to satisfy a craving. I wanted something sweet and cold, and I found much more at Paolo’s Gelato Italiano.

Tucked away near the corner of Virginia and Highland, the gelateria offers the freshest gelato I’ve ever tasted. The constantly rotating flavors include mainstreams like chocolate, vanilla, and caramel, but there’s so much more. I’ve heard rumors of the to-die-for rose-flavored gelato, but they didn’t have it on my visit (must be a summer thing). Instead, I settled for a combination of pear, mango, and a zabaione with maraschino flavor. All were great, but the pear? It was like biting into a fresh picked pear, juicy but cool… amazing. I swear I had dreams about it days afterwards.

Did I mention I was lactose intolerant? Who cares – it’s that good.

Gelato is offered in cups and cones. The best news: mix and match 1-4 flavors in any size. Paolo’s also offers other sweets like canollis, espresso, and much more.

Paolo’s is one of those places we take people from out of town. Good stuff.
