A question for our readers

Just how awesome is Metal-some Mondays at 10 High? I know that the Loaf called it the Best Intown Karaoke Night and all, but I want the real skinny. Is it smoky? Is it okay just to spectate? How do they treat first-timers who don’t have much talent? Can you talk to the people you go with? I’m thinking about going next Monday and I’ve never been before…

Give me the skinny…

(P.S. sorry for the lame slang in that last line. I don’t know what got in to me)

Sorry I can’t tell you how awesome it is (as I haven’t been yet), but I’m thinking of going next Monday too. I’ve heard it’s great though, and I have nothing but praise for 10 High and their booking gal Nicole, if that means anything!

I’ve gone a few times. From what I saw:

    * It is as smoky as any other bar. Maybe a little less; I don’t recall my clothes or hair reeking of cigarette smoke later.

    * It’s perfectly fine to spectate. The times I was there, it was so crowded, there was no way everyone could go on. And it can get really, really crowded.

    * First timers are treated kindly and cheered on, from what I saw. And I saw some pretty, er, not-so-good first timers (deer in the headlights stagefright, that sort of thing). Almost no one had any actual singing talent; I kind of thought that was the point of karoake.

    * If you mean talk to people while the music is playing, no. It’s a live band mixed Atlanta-style, which means deafening levels in a little echoey room. I had to bring ear plugs.

In short, I thought it was fun, and the band was good.
