The city of Atlanta – among other cities in the U.S. – has shown an outpouring of desire to help the victims of the hurricane. I feel a bit better about mankind when I see this sort of thing. People here in Atlanta, like my friend Jeanneís father, are even willing to open their homes to complete strangers who are in need of shelter.

But there are helpless individuals who cannot use a cell phone or flag down a rescue helicopter and be saved. While companion animals have not been altogether ignored in this tragedy, it is clear that they are being put on the ìback burnerî so to speak, which of course must be done. I still struggle with this though, because they (and children) are the most innocent and helpless victims in this situation.
