They’re just a few of the rollergirls you can see at the All-American Skate Center on Sunday, July 17th for the official competitive debut of the Atlanta Rollergirls roller derby league.
Honestly, I don’t know what to expect. I think the only roller derby-ing I’ve ever seen was on an episode of CHiPs. I was pre-pubescent though so it didn’t make as lasting an impression as the motorcycles and car wrecks.
So far though, all signs point to fun. The league is incorporated (translation: someone is spending some money and taking it seriously) and has several teams that have been practicing against each other for months.
Also, the derby girls have been waging a big, grassroots publicity campaign that has left the intown neighborhoods south of North Avenue and East of I-75/85* covered with flyers and posters.
I’ll be there on Sunday. If you see me, say hi.
*Correction — in the original post I accidentally wrote I-20.
I emailed my family info on this event earlier today. I hope I can convince ’em to come — I think it’ll be a hoot. You can save $2 by buying your ticket from Ticket Alternative before the day of the show. All the best, Steve Barton
