Vanity Plates
I’m always amazed at folks who choose to display their personality on the alpha-numeric canvas of a license plate. I’ll be honest and say that while I don’t fully understand the motivation of these individuals I love seeing their handiwork on my daily commute. My wife has had to remind me on multiple occassions that stopping the car and jumping out to take a picture would be, at best, a sketchy idea. Still, I’m very drawn to all the permutations of letters and numbers presented by these vanity plates, so much so that I did start taking pictures of these little declarations of individuality, despite the risk or personal injury.
I’d love to hear some stories about great vanity plates you’ve seen or heard about. Drop me a link in the comments, especially if you have pictures. I’m off to plan my vanity plate! Do you think ‘BLOGGER’ is taken?
I’m a vanity plate fan myself. I probably wouldn’t buy one (too broke after too many years of grad school), but I’m impressed by the creativity, especially in states like Illinois where vanity plates were basically no more expensive than normal plates.
Dude…one of those photos is of a plate that says…um, DIGLER2?
As in Dirk Diggler, the pseudonym Mark Wahlberg’s well-hung character chooses in Boogie Nights? Now that’s some hubris, man. I’d like to shake the dude’s hand just for his moxie.
Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode in which Kramer accidentally gets the proctologist’s vanity plates that say “Assman.”
There is a GA Tech student from the North East that has ‘31337’
Which means elite for all you non-geeks.
A buddy of mine has WNDRFCK…
Meaning Wonder F*ck, kind of funny
BLOGGER is taken, well in CA anyway. One of the guys at Blogger actually has it, but you could probably score in GA.
Many thanks to everyone who has commented. I’m still on the fence about getting a new plate (I have to renew my license by October, 15 – my birthday), but I do enjoy seeing them around town.
Hilarious …I’ve always wanted to get ‘bkupoffme’ on my plate for those fabulous bumper dwellers that don’t understand that my 93 accord doesn’t go any faster!!
There are a couple of irritating ones around … the orange Z with the “4u2nv” or the silver benz with the plate DD DOC … I take that to mean Double D doc aka boob doctor …
I think I want mine to be something like BLOGTNR (or BlogTenor) or maybe something really appropriate like OPRADRK (opera dork.) That last one could be misconstrued as OPRAH dork, and that would really trash my uber masculine image to the world at large. Really.
The plate I’d really like, G8RH8R, is probably already taken. As a Dawg Alum through and through I have to find another way of showing my school spirit.
There’s an urban myth about the following vanity plate making it past the DoT censors: 3AT 3M. Of course, this only works when the state in question requires license plates on the front and back.
…Mark- took me about 3 minutes to figure that one out … good one!
